I wanted a British degree. What I could not do was pay British tuition and British rent for three years.

Fatima Al-Sayed BSc (Hons) Computer Science

The journey

How it unfolded

5 chapters

  1. Chapter 01

    The goal

Fatima wanted a computer science degree awarded by a UK university, and had assumed that meant studying in the UK. The family budget did not support three years of UK tuition plus living costs.

  2. Chapter 02

    The challenges

The branch campus route was unfamiliar, and the first question was the obvious one: is the degree the same? That needed a documented answer, not reassurance.

There was also a document problem. The EMGS student pass application rejects photographs and passport scans that do not meet its specification, and the first set submitted was returned.

  3. Chapter 03

    How we supported

We set out how branch campus awards work — the degree certificate is issued by the home university, quality assurance follows the home institution, and the programme is separately MQA accredited in Malaysia. We showed where each of those claims could be verified independently rather than asking anyone to take our word for it.

We modelled the total cost of both routes over three years, including tuition, accommodation, food and travel. The Malaysian route came out at roughly a third of the UK equivalent.

On the rejected documents, we re-shot the photographs to EMGS specification and re-scanned every passport page at the required resolution before resubmission.

  4. Chapter 04

    The admission journey

The application was submitted in May and the conditional offer arrived within two weeks, confirmed unconditionally once the final school results were released in July.

The EMGS student pass application was lodged in late July. The first submission was returned on document quality; the corrected set was accepted and the visa approval letter issued in the third week of August. Fatima arrived in Penang in early September and completed the post-arrival medical screening within the required window.

  5. Chapter 05

    The outcome

Fatima is in the final year of the computer science degree in Penang, has completed an internship with an electronics manufacturer in the region, and will graduate with the home university's award.
