Overview

An introduction to studying in Cyprus

Cyprus sits at the meeting point of Europe, Asia and the Middle East, and its universities have built their reputation on that position. Most institutions teach entirely in English, welcome large numbers of international students, and structure their degrees around the European Credit Transfer System, so qualifications translate cleanly if you later move elsewhere in Europe.

For many students the decision comes down to value. Tuition and living costs are meaningfully lower than in Western Europe while the academic framework, quality assurance and degree recognition remain European. Class sizes tend to be small, teaching staff are accessible, and campuses are compact enough that a new arrival settles in quickly.

Why here

Why study in Cyprus?

  • 01

    Programmes taught in English

The large majority of bachelor's, master's and MBA programmes are delivered entirely in English, so no additional local-language qualification is needed.

  • 02

    A European academic framework

Degrees follow the Bologna structure and ECTS credits, and are quality-assured by the national agency for higher education.

  • 03

    Lower total cost of study

Tuition and day-to-day living costs are typically well below Western European averages, which shortens the funding gap many families need to close.

  • 04

    A genuinely international campus

Cypriot universities host students from across Europe, Africa, South Asia and the Middle East, so international students are the norm rather than the exception.

  • 05

    A safe, walkable student environment

Cities are small, public transport is straightforward, and student neighbourhoods sit close to campus.

  • 06

    Mediterranean quality of life

Mild winters, a long coastline and an outdoor culture make the adjustment period considerably easier for most students.

Academic structure

The education system

Higher education in Cyprus is organised under the Bologna framework. Bachelor's degrees usually run four years and carry 240 ECTS credits; master's degrees run one to two years at 90–120 ECTS; MBA programmes are typically 18 months. Foundation and pathway years exist for applicants who need additional academic or English preparation before entering a degree.

Assessment blends coursework, projects and examinations rather than relying on a single final paper, and most programmes include a capstone project or dissertation in the final year. Public and private universities are both regulated by the national agency responsible for quality assurance and accreditation.

Admissions

Entry requirements

Requirements vary between universities and programmes; the list below reflects what most applicants are asked for.

Bachelor's degree
Completed secondary education (12 years) with satisfactory grades. English evidence through IELTS 5.5–6.0, TOEFL iBT 70–80, an accepted equivalent, or prior study in English. Several universities will assess applicants through an internal English placement test instead.

Master's degree
A recognised bachelor's degree in a related field, usually with a minimum grade average. English evidence through IELTS 6.0–6.5 or an accepted equivalent. Some programmes ask for a statement of purpose and two references.

MBA
A bachelor's degree, and for several programmes one to three years of professional experience. A CV and statement of purpose are normally required.

Foundation / pathway
Completed secondary education. Designed for applicants who need additional academic or language preparation before progressing to a full degree.

Budget

    Tuition per year

Indicative, confirmed in the offer letter

  • €6,000 – €9,600

    Living costs per year

    Accommodation, food and transport

Indicative annual tuition ranges from around €3,500 to €12,000 depending on the university, the level of study and the subject. Business, management and social science programmes sit toward the lower end; engineering, health sciences and specialist laboratory-based programmes sit higher.

Several universities publish merit scholarships that reduce tuition for applicants with strong academic results. These are awarded at the university's discretion and are confirmed in the offer letter — never before an application has been assessed.

Most students budget €500–€800 per month, or roughly €6,000–€9,600 across an academic year. Shared student accommodation, cooking at home and using student transport discounts keep costs at the lower end of that range. Nicosia and Limassol are typically more expensive than smaller cities.

Accommodation (shared)
€250 – €450 per month
Food and groceries
€150 – €250 per month
Transport
€30 – €60 per month, with a student pass
Utilities and internet
€50 – €90 per month, shared
Health insurance

The process

How the application works

  1. 01

    Profile assessment

We review your academic background, English level and budget, and confirm which universities and programmes you are realistically eligible for.

  2. 02

    Shortlist and choose

You receive a comparison of suitable options with tuition, entry requirements and intake dates set out side by side.

  3. 03

    Prepare documents

We help you assemble transcripts, certificates, passport copy, English evidence, CV and statement of purpose in the format each university expects.

  4. 04

    Submit the application

Applications are submitted to your chosen universities and tracked until a decision is issued.

  5. 05

    Receive the offer

Offer letters are reviewed with you, including any conditions, scholarship outcome and acceptance deadline.

  6. 06

    Accept and pay the deposit

You confirm your place and pay the tuition deposit required for the university to issue immigration documents.

  7. 07

    Student visa preparation

We guide you through the entry permit application, supporting documents, financial evidence and medical requirements.

  8. 08

    Pre-departure briefing

Accommodation, arrival, registration, banking and what to expect in your first weeks.

Paperwork

Documents you will need

  • English language evidence or university placement test result
  • Completed application form
  • Passport-sized photographs to the specification requested
  • Curriculum vitae (postgraduate and MBA applicants)

  • Reference letters (where the programme requires them)
  • Financial evidence for the immigration stage
  • Medical test results and police clearance for the entry permit

Immigration

Student visa guidance

Non-EU students apply for an entry permit through the Civil Registry and Migration Department, normally with the university acting as the sponsoring institution once tuition and acceptance are confirmed. The application generally requires the offer letter, financial evidence, medical test results, police clearance and health insurance.

Processing times vary by season and by the applicant's country of residence, so we recommend beginning the process as soon as the offer is accepted. Our team prepares your document set, checks it against the current requirements and briefs you before submission. Final decisions rest entirely with the immigration authorities.

Visa and admission decisions rest entirely with the relevant institutions and government authorities. We prepare and check your documents; we cannot guarantee an outcome, and you should be cautious of anyone who says otherwise.

Living there

Student life and career opportunities

University life in Cyprus is close-knit. Campuses run societies, sports clubs and cultural associations, and international student offices organise orientation, trips and social events through the year. Because the international student community is large and long established, most new arrivals find a support network within their first few weeks.

Outside term time, the island is small enough to explore over weekends — coastal towns, mountain villages and archaeological sites are all within a short drive, and domestic travel is inexpensive.

Career opportunities

International students may work a limited number of hours per week during term time in eligible sectors, subject to the conditions attached to their residence permit. Universities run career services offering CV support, internship placement and employer events.

Graduates commonly progress into roles across shipping and logistics, financial and professional services, tourism and hospitality, and a growing technology sector concentrated in Limassol and Nicosia. Others use the qualification as a route into postgraduate study elsewhere in Europe.

Common questions

Studying in Cyprus: your questions

If yours is not answered here, ask it directly. We would rather clear it up before you apply.

Programmes at accredited Cypriot universities follow the Bologna structure and use ECTS credits, so they are read consistently across the European Higher Education Area. Check that your specific programme is accredited by the national quality assurance agency — we confirm this for every institution we shortlist, and you can verify it independently.

No. The overwhelming majority of international programmes are taught entirely in English, and university administration operates in English for international students. Learning some Greek makes daily life easier but is not an academic requirement.

Typically several weeks to a few months after your acceptance and tuition deposit are confirmed, with the university acting as sponsor. Processing varies by season and by your country of residence, which is why we begin document preparation as soon as an offer is accepted rather than after.

International students may work a limited number of hours per week in eligible sectors, subject to the conditions on their residence permit. It is a supplement to your budget, not a substitute for funding your studies.
